Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
