While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.
To quantify this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely powerful.
Honestly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
